Description
Schwaab Stamp & Seal Co. of Milwaukee signed both sides of HK-254 in microscopic letters, "Schwaab S & S Co." and "Milwaukee" under the obverse view and "S. S. & S. Co. Milwaukee" at the foot of the reverse. The obverse is a view of the Midwinter Exposition under a setting sun, with "Midwinter Exposition" above and "1894 / San Francisco, Cal." below. The reverse groups five buildings in beaded round panels, as on HK-260, and fills the gaps between the outer panels with a caduceus, an artist's palette and brushes over a scroll, a mechanic's tools and a bouquet of fruit, vegetables and flowers, emblems that fit a fair built around farm, orchard and mineral displays. This is the first of the large 45 mm aluminum pieces; HK-255 keeps the same obverse.
