Description

Atlanta's motto "Resurgens" rides above the phoenix on the obverse of HK-269, one of a set of exposition palace medals for the Cotton States and International Exposition of 1895. The bird spreads its wings over the fire, the wingtips breaking through the second of two circles, with rays and 1895 overhead and 1865 in the flames beneath; "Atlanta, Ga." fills the lower part of the band, and the outer legend gives the exposition's name and its run from September 18th to December 31st. Tiny letters beside the date read "Childs" and "Chi." The reverse pictures the Administration Building under the exposition name. HK-269 is the aluminum striking, 38 mm; a brass one is HK-269a, and the same phoenix die was paired with the Fine Arts Building (HK-270) and the Woman's Building (HK-271).
