Description
S. D. Childs & Co. of Chicago signed the Fine Arts Building reverse of HK-270 in microscopic letters at the bottom border, and an abbreviated form of the same mark, "Childs" and "Chi.," sits beside the date on the phoenix obverse that all the Cotton States palace medals share. The exposition ran in Piedmont Park, Atlanta, from September 18 to December 31, 1895, and drew close to 800,000 visitors. Its grounds were laid out around a large central plaza with sweeping curved terraces, so that the ring of exhibition palaces gave the feeling of an amphitheater, and a lake reflected the big wood-frame buildings, painted gray and white and mostly Romanesque in style. HK-270 is brass, 38 mm; the aluminum version is HK-270a.
