1895 So-Called Dollar HK-271a, Woman's Building
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Atlanta's 1895 exposition was the first in the United States to give real prominence to an exhibit on the progress of Black Americans, and Booker T. Washington spoke at the opening ceremonies, for which Victor Herbert wrote his Salute to Atlanta. The Liberty Bell came down from Philadelphia for a Liberty Bell Day on October 9, and besides cotton the fair stressed farming, coal mining, fertilizers, iron and lumber. HK-271a commemorates the Woman's Building of the Cotton States and International Exposition: the building on the reverse inside the exposition legend, and on the obverse the Atlanta phoenix with "Resurgens" and the dates 1865 and 1895. There was no Mint exhibit at this fair, and the palace medals were made by a Chicago firm. It is brass, 38 mm, a companion to the aluminum HK-271.
