Description

Type II of the brass Midwinter souvenir, HK-245a, uses a recut state seal that differs from Type I (HK-245) in several details. The sun's rays, rising from behind the mountains, stop short of the stars at the border; the three ships and the miner with his pick are drawn much smaller; the bear lies down; and the signature "Moise S. F." appears near the bottom edge. There is no border circle on either side. The reverse keeps the five-line text of Type I, but the date and the words "Souvenir / California / Midwinter / Exposition" are cut much larger. The fair it remembers opened at the end of February 1894 and closed in early July, on ground cleared for it at the center of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Like Type I, it is 33 mm and was long, though wrongly, called official.
