Description
The state seal on HK-261 is framed by a border of roses running between two circles, with 1894 below it and "Souvenir San Francisco California, U. S. A." around, stars setting off the first word. On the reverse a view of the exposition, tower in the foreground, sits between "California" above and "Midwinter International Exposition" below. The fair it records was the idea of M. H. de Young, and his executive committee raised the money through public subscriptions and concession contracts rather than any government grant. It opened in Golden Gate Park in the winter of 1894 so that visitors could compare California's weather with the cold back east. The piece is aluminum, and at 41 mm it falls between the 38 mm and 45 mm sizes of the other aluminum souvenirs.
