Description
Lauer signed a run of small aluminum souvenirs at the 1894 Midwinter fair, HK-262 through HK-267, which Hibler and Kappen group as Lauer's Exhibition Palace dollars. All share an obverse with a modified California state seal in a beaded border. HK-262 is the general view: the exposition grounds stretch across the reverse, with "California / San Francisco" above and "Midwinter / International / Exposition, 1894" below, and the name Lauer appears near the edge at the lower left of the scene. The fair filled the middle of Golden Gate Park through the first half of 1894, and the Lauer series then turns to its separate buildings: Fine Arts, Mechanics, Agriculture, Manufactures and Administration. This first piece is aluminum, 35 mm across.
