Description
The Palace of Fine Arts was one of only two permanent buildings at the 1894 Midwinter Exposition, and Lauer's HK-263 gives it a reverse of its own. The building stands under "California Midwinter Internat. Expos. / San Francisco 1894," with "Fine Arts / Building" below it and Lauer's name near the edge at lower left, all within a beaded border. On the obverse is the altered state seal that every Lauer piece carries. Because the fair's subscriptions were apparently given outright, its profits went to buy foreign art as the core of a city museum, and in 1917 the de Young Museum took the place of this building. The medal is aluminum, 35 mm. HK-262 shows the grounds as a whole, and HK-264 through HK-267 picture other halls.
