Panama-Pacific Exposition (1915)

About This Coin
Held in San Francisco from February to December 1915 to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal and the city's resurrection from the devastating 1906 earthquake, the Panama-Pacific International Exposition generated one of the most prolific bodies of so-called dollar medals in American numismatic history. The exposition covered 635 acres in the Marina District and attracted nearly 19 million visitors, many of whom purchased commemorative medals as keepsakes of their visit. So-called dollars from the Panama-Pacific Exposition are cataloged in the Hibler-Kappen (HK) reference and encompass official exposition medals, exhibitor awards, concession tokens, and privately produced souvenirs — all struck in approximately dollar-sized formats ranging from 33 to 45 millimeters in diameter. Metal compositions include silver, bronze, aluminum, and gilt varieties, with designs featuring the exposition's architectural landmarks (the Tower of Jewels, the Palace of Fine Arts), allegorical figures representing the Pacific and Atlantic oceans joined by the canal, and portraits of exposition officials and Panama Canal engineers. A notable auction result reached $4,500 in MS62 grade at Kagin's, reflecting the market strength for high-grade examples of the scarcer HK varieties. The 1915 exposition also produced the famous federal commemorative coins — the Panama-Pacific half dollar, gold dollar, quarter eagle, and the legendary $50 round and octagonal pieces — but the so-called dollar medals occupy their own collecting niche with broader variety and more accessible price points. Collectors pursuing this material benefit from the extensive photographic record of the exposition and from the relatively large surviving populations of common types, while rarities such as presentation medals and low-mintage exhibitor awards challenge even the most advanced specialists.
