Description

HK-257 pairs two sides from elsewhere in the large Midwinter series: the scroll-framed state seal of HK-256, with a single star under it and the exposition's name around it, and the San Francisco facts side of HK-255, where twenty-two lines of civic information sit in a circle under "Souvenir of San Francisco" and over "Metropolis of the Western Coast." No date appears; the year 1894 is the year of the fair. Exhibits that had been shown in Chicago were carried west to the Midwinter Exposition by numerous states, territories and foreign nations, though few of them built halls of their own; many California counties did. There was early grumbling that the federal government had actually slowed the transfer of foreign displays. This piece is aluminum, 45 mm.
