Description
M. H. de Young, owner of the San Francisco Chronicle, came up with the Midwinter Exposition while serving as a vice president of the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and pressed for it hard in his paper. The fair opened in Golden Gate Park in 1894, and HK-246 shows two of its sights in aluminum, 40 mm. The obverse places the Administration Building in a sunken center, named above, with "A. Hylen. Chi." on the base at right and, below, a microscopic "Blumenfeld S. F. C." and a bear walking right; the outer legend names the California Midwinter International Exposition and the year. The reverse shows the electric tower, with 18 and 94 split between scrolls at either side, another walking bear under it and "Souvenir of San Francisco" around. The same obverse paired with a wheel is HK-247.
