Description

Gilt bronze and eight-sided, HK-424 is the gilt form of the first octagonal souvenir of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, made by Irvine & Jachens of Daly City, California, in oreide. One side recalls the Gold Rush with the rhyme "The Days of Old the Days of Gold the Days of Forty Nine" around a beaded circle holding "Souvenir," the PPIE monogram, San Francisco and the date; C. G. Brinker of San Francisco signed it. The other side copies an 1851 Augustus Humbert fifty-dollar gold slug of the target-reverse kind, with "000 Thou" in the upper ribbon and a legend calling it an imitation of the pioneers' slug of 1850. It measures 40 mm by 40 mm; the silver-plated version, always weak on the obverse, is HK-423.
