Description
Alabama's state seal fills the center of HK-402, with "Alabama" above and "Great Seal" below, single stars at the sides dividing the two words, inside a beaded border. The reverse is an open wreath tied with a bow, enclosing "Alabama at Panama Pacific International Exposition San Francisco 1915" and a line of scrollwork; on the ribbons of the bow the makers signed in microscopic letters, "W & H Co" on the left for Whitehead & Hoag Co. and "Newark N.J." on the right. Like other state fund dollars, the medal was sold before the exposition, usually for a dollar, to help pay for the state's exhibit in San Francisco. HK-402 is bronze, 38 mm; a silver-plated bronze version is HK-402a.
