Description

Oregon's state building at the 1915 exposition, shown on the obverse of HK-411 with "Oregon State Building" below it, called to mind the Parthenon, but its huge columns were whole fir logs, meant to remind visitors that the state held a quarter of all the standing timber in the United States. The building sits inside the legends "Panama Pacific International Exposition" and "San Francisco, 1915," with the microscopic "W. & H Co. Newark. N.J." between the legend and the beaded border. The reverse is a variation of the state seal, "State of Oregon" above and 1859 between stars below. Oregon sold it, as other states sold theirs, to pay toward its exhibit. HK-411 is bronze, 38 mm; the silver-plated bronze version is HK-411a.
