Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Forty-four states and territories took part in the 1915 exposition at San Francisco, and Maryland marked its presence with this medal, handed out on Maryland Day to officials and other guests. HK-407a is the silver-plated bronze version. Its obverse places the state seal in a circle with "Maryland at Panama Pacific International Exposition 1915" around it and tiny letters reading "M C P P I Ex 1915" under the seal. The reverse pairs the authors of two songs, James Ryder Randall, who wrote "Maryland My Maryland," and Francis Scott Key, author of the "Star-Spangled Banner," their busts one above the other in twin circles inside a laurel wreath. Twenty-eight states, 22 foreign nations and New York City put up buildings of their own at the fair. 38 mm; the bronze is HK-407.
