Description
Gold and silver, "Oro Y Plata," is the motto on the ribbon at the bottom of this Montana medal's reverse, where picks and farm tools lie before a mountain landscape with a stream, trees, clouds and the sun and its rays, under the legend "For Montana Exposition Fund." Montana sold it before the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition to help meet the cost of its exhibit. The fair's builders set its palaces around courts designed to catch the sunlight and shelter visitors from the brisk winds off the bay, and they used color lavishly. On the obverse a winged Victory with a wreath stands on a ship's prow above the date 1915. HK-409 is the bronze striking, 38 mm, of a design also listed in silver-plated bronze and gilt.
