Description
The Tower of Jewels, the 435-foot centerpiece of the 1915 exposition, hung with thousands of Austrian cut-glass gems that flashed under the floodlights, is the reverse of HK-415a, labelled "Tower of Jewels" above the building and ringed by "California the Exposition State" and "San Francisco 1915." The obverse is a reworked version of the Exposition State figure of HK-414: the woman with flag and wreath and the bear are still there, though the bear is drawn differently, but the buildings, sun and rays are gone, replaced by a heavily fluted background radiating out behind her. HK-415 pairs the same tower with the original figure. HK-415a is gilt brass, reeded, 35 mm.
