Description

HK-411a, the silver-plated bronze version of Oregon's 1915 exposition fund medal, carries Oregon's statehood year, 1859, at the foot of its reverse beneath a variation of the state seal and the words "State of Oregon." The obverse pictures the Oregon State Building at San Francisco, a temple-like structure whose columns were giant fir logs, chosen to advertise the state's forests. Whitehead & Hoag of Newark made the medal and signed it in microscopic letters at the bottom. Hibler and Kappen observe that by 1915 laying out an exposition had become almost a profession, and at San Francisco the plan was a novel series of sheltered courts with the buildings secondary to them. The size is 38 mm, as for the bronze HK-411.
