1915 So-Called Dollar HK-408, Panama-Pacific Expo

Description

Jefferson Davis, turned slightly right, and John A. Quitman, facing front, share the obverse of HK-408, each with his name and a year above the shoulder, 1846 for Davis and 1848 for Quitman, inside the legend "Panama Pacific Exposition San Francisco 1915 Mississippi's Winners of the West." The reverse shows a building surrounded by "Contribution of the Women of Mississippi Mississippi Dollar Exhibit Fund," with the microscopic signature "Robbins Co Attleboro" near the bottom of the legend. The women of Mississippi thus raised money for the state's exhibit by selling the medal ahead of the fair. Federal displays at the exposition included a Mint exhibit, and the exhibits as a whole numbered some 80,000. HK-408 is bronze, 38 mm; HK-408a is the silver-plated bronze.
