Description
Robert Aitken, the sculptor who won the design contest for the official medal of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, put winged Mercury on the obverse, pushing open the locks of the canal as the ship Argo, emblem of navigation, passes through with the setting sun lighting her sails. Beneath the vessel are the words "On! Sail On!" and at lower right "Aitken Fecit."; the legend reads "To Commemorate the Opening of the Panama Canal M C M X V." Congress authorized the medal, and the pieces came off a Mint press set up as an exhibit at the San Francisco fairgrounds in 1915. The Department of Official Coins and Medals, headed by Farran Zerbe, sold the silver pieces, .890 fine, for a dollar each. HK-399 is silver, 38 mm; bronze is HK-400 and gilt HK-401.
