Description
The Panama Canal's story is told through its leaders on the four-portrait reverse of HK-421: Count F. De Lesseps, honored as "the Beginner," at the bottom, and above him Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Col. George W. Goethals, under an eagle with wings spread and a ribbon praising the nation and its officers for completing the task. The obverse is a fanciful map in which the 1915 exposition's buildings, shrunk small, cover North America; the Ancon, first ship through the canal, sails in the Pacific, the Atlantic is marked to the right, and the sun and an airplane fill the sky. Microscopic lettering gives "Pat Aug 1914" and "W & H Co" for Whitehead & Hoag. HK-421 is bronze, 34 mm, the companion to the silver-plated HK-420.
