Description

Money for state exhibits at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition did not always come from legislatures, and several states, Alabama included, raised part of it by selling medals ahead of time. HK-402a is Alabama's in silver-plated bronze; Hibler and Kappen explain that the state fund medals were all bronze apart from Arkansas's aluminum piece, and that some were silver-plated officially and others privately. The design is plain and heraldic: the Great Seal of Alabama on one side, and on the other a wreath enclosing eight lines that place Alabama at the exposition in San Francisco in 1915, its bow signed by Whitehead & Hoag of Newark, New Jersey. The size is 38 mm, the same as the unplated bronze HK-402.
