Philippines Peso 1903-1945
Coin Series
About This Series
As the crown denomination of the Philippine coinage system under American authority, the peso served as the primary large silver coin, modeled on the Mexican peso that had circulated throughout Southeast Asia for centuries. The obverse features a standing female figure with hammer and anvil symbolizing industry, while the reverse displays the American eagle and shield. These substantial silver coins were struck at Philadelphia, San Francisco, Denver, and the Manila Mint — the only U.S. Mint on foreign soil. The silver content was initially set at approximately 80% fine, maintaining a fixed exchange rate with the U.S. dollar. The series spans the entire American period, from the 1903 monetary system establishment through wartime issues of 1944-1945 when stateside mints resumed production after Japanese occupation closed Manila. The 1906-S proof is among the greatest Philippine rarities, produced in extremely limited quantities for presentation. The peso's design, weight, and content positioned it as the successor to Spanish and Mexican silver that had dominated Philippine commerce for over three centuries.
