Description

The 1907 (S) Philippine Peso was struck at the San Francisco Mint and carries a small S mint mark on the reverse, to the left of the date. From 1907 the peso was cut to 20 grams of 80 percent silver and 35 millimeters, under the act of June 23, 1906, which set a floor of 70 percent silver for the peso; the designs did not change. San Francisco struck the reduced peso until 1912, the last regular pesos of the American period. The obverse is Melecio Figueroa's young woman in a flowing gown striking an anvil with a hammer, the smoking cone of Mount Mayon behind her, with the value above and FILIPINAS below. The reverse shows the American eagle over a striped shield, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date. The recorded mintage is 10,278,000. Many reduced pesos were among the silver thrown into the sea off Corregidor in 1942, and pieces salvaged later often show the effects of the water. Catalogue numbers: KM-172. PCGS number 90393.
