Early Republic Patterns (1792-1859)
Coin Series
About This Series
From the experimental half dismes and cents of 1792 through mid-19th-century design proposals, Early Republic patterns document the creative evolution of the United States Mint during its foundational decades. The series opens with the celebrated 1792 patterns — including the Birch cent, Silver Center cent, and various Washington pieces — that tested designs and compositions before Congress settled on specifications in the Coinage Act of April 2, 1792. Subsequent decades produced patterns exploring alternative Liberty portraits, eagle configurations, and denominational formats, including the Gobrecht dollar patterns of the 1830s and experimental cent designs preceding the Flying Eagle. The Judd reference catalog provides the standard numbering system, assigning each distinct combination of obverse, reverse, composition, and edge treatment its own number. Many survive in quantities below 10 specimens, with some being unique. These pieces illuminate the decision-making process behind America's evolving coinage, preserving both rejected and eventually adopted designs.
