Description

The 1905 (S) Philippine Peso - Curved Serif, Allen-16.06 was struck at the San Francisco Mint and carries a small S mint mark on the reverse, to the left of the date. Pesos of 1903 to 1906 follow the first standard of the act of March 2, 1903, under which the peso stood at half a United States dollar: about 26.95 grams of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, with a reeded edge. The obverse is Melecio Figueroa's young woman in a flowing gown striking an anvil with a hammer, the smoking cone of Mount Mayon behind her, with the value above and FILIPINAS below. The reverse shows the American eagle over a striped shield, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date. San Francisco's 1905 pesos come with two forms of the 1 in the date; this page is the one with a curved serif at the top of the 1 (Allen-16.06). The 6,056,000 recorded for 1905-S covers both, and no source gives a separate figure for either. Catalogue numbers: Allen-16.06, KM-168. PCGS number 90385.
