Description

The 1878 (S) Morgan Dollar, struck at the San Francisco Mint, is part of the Morgan Dollars 1878-1921 collection. With a mintage of 9.8 million, this is a less common issue — the highest mintage among 11 variants, accounting for 19% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, encircled by stars and the reverse displays an eagle with outstretched wings clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by a wreath. First year of the Morgan Dollar. Eight tail feather and seven tail feather varieties exist from early die adjustments. The San Francisco Mint, a Gold Rush-era institution, now specializes in proof and collector coinage. Estimated market value ranges from $87 to $547 depending on grade and condition.
