1878 (S) Morgan Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1878-S WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1878-S Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. Every letter of E PLURIBUS UNUM shows signs of doubling, strongest on the E, RI and M. LIBERTY is spread to the right, and the wheat grains above it, the eyelid and the ear's back are doubled. All the stars on both sides and all the digits of the date show some doubling; Wexler explains that dates were added to the master dies in 1878, so the date doubling is not repunching. Wexler notes no obverse markers. On the reverse, a strong gouge runs NE to SW through the center feathers of the eagle's right wing and out into the field. Joe Groff submitted the variety. Its VAM number is 16.
