=1878-S VAM-5 Doubled 878, Tripled Eyelid= Discovered by Paul Williams, August 1966. Revised 2012 This coin is a Top 30 1878-S Variety. 5(revised) II 4 · B2i (Doubled 878, Tripled Eyelid) (184) Obverse II 4 – Both 8s doubled on right side of upper loop opening. Crossbar of the 7 is doubled at top and right side. S of PLURIBUS and UNU of UNUM slightly doubled on right side. LUR-US doubled on left side. All letters of LIBERTY doubled with shift down. Lower hair slightly doubled. Nostril, lips, chin and neck doubled. Cotton leaves doubled at top. Wheat leaves slightly doubled on right side. Eyelid slightly tripled. Point on number 4 right star not broken. Die chip in middle of cheek and two at lower right cotton leaves. Thread-like impression below ear next to hair front. Reverse B2i – Feather engraved between eagle’s right wing and leg. Center of wings over polished. R in Trust broken. Very slight doubling of TED STATES AMER. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # There's a lot going on with this coin. The date is doubled on the right side. The eyelid is tripled with slight gaps between each instance of the eyelid. The 4th right star is not broken in this case. There is a die chip in middle of cheek, and a good sized rust pit on the eagle's beak. # Most of Liberty's lower hair is also doubled, not just the lower edge as may be inferred from the specification. # The reverse shares the same die as VAM 46 and VAM 7 which have the R in TRUST broken and a uniquely engraved wing feather where it attaches to the body.
