=1878-S VAM-27A Long Nock, Broken N and D= Discovered by Chuck Emery, July 2015 This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAMs & WOW! VAMs. This coin is a Top 30 1878-S Variety. 27A II 1 ยท B1b (Long Center Arrow Shaft, Die Wear Lines ONE DOLL) (184) Obverse II 1โ Three faint spikes below eyelid front, short vertical line in eyelid top corner and short vertical line at top of eye socket above eyelid. Reverse B1bโ Raised vertical die wear lines from denticle edges into field below ONE DOLL and some extending to ONE DOLL letters. Single line from each denticle edge. Also has long verticle die wear line up from right side of wreath bow and at first left op berry of left wreath and first right top berry of right wreath. Likely caused by improperly basined die or slightly tilted die planchet metal flow back towards coin center instead of normally outward. DPIS โ In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # Similar to 21 S 1L and 1Y die wear lines from improperly basined die or slightly tilted die planchet metal flow back towards coin center instead of normally outward. An interesting and different wear on rev. Guess S.F. Mint was having difficulties with B1 die setups in presses besides B2 rev. dies. Comments: # The 1878-S Long Nocks include 1878-S VAM-26, 1878-S VAM-27, 1878-S VAM-56, 1878-S VAM-57, 1878-S VAM-58, 1878-S VAM-59, 1878-S VAM-60, 1878-S VAM-62 & 1878-S VAM-72. #Likely example from Heritage archives https://coins.ha.com/itm/morgan-dollars/1878-s-1-long-arrow-shaft-vam-27-top-100-xf45-pcgs-pcgs-population-21-18-and-0-0-ngc-census-0-0-and-0-0-cdn-275-whsle-bid/a/63229-93084.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515
