1878 (S) Morgan Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

1878-S WDDO-005 is a doubled die obverse on the 1878-S Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. PLURIBUS's R is strongly doubled, the left side of US in PLURIBUS is lightly doubled, and UNUM shows light doubling toward the rim. LIBERTY is lightly doubled and the eyelid is split. In the date, the top of the 1 and the top of the last 8's inner loop are doubled. On the obverse, the fourth star on the right has a broken left point, and a strong scratch marks the right side of the 7. The reverse is WDDR-002, with a split upper right serif on the S mint mark and a leaf from the third group of the left olive branch abraded away. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
