1878-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team and submitted by John A. Wexler, this inaugural-year San Francisco Morgan Dollar exhibits a doubled die obverse created by misalignment during the hub-to-die transfer process. Cross-referenced as none known. Obverse die markers include the fourth star on the right with a broken left point and a strong die scratch on the right side of the 7 in the date. The reverse is identified as WDDR-002, making this a dual-attribution variety with both obverse and reverse doubling from the same die pair. Additional reverse markers: a split upper right serif of the S mintmark and the leaf of the left olive branch (third group) abraded away. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 26.73 grams and 38.1 mm, George T. Morgan's design debuted in 1878 at four mint facilities.
