1878 (S) Morgan Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

1878-S WDDO-004 is a doubled die obverse on the 1878-S Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. Very strong doubling shows on LIBERTY, Liberty's bonnet, the leaves and almost every hair detail. It is very strong as well on the eyelid, nostril, lips, chin and throat, the inside of the ear, the sixth star at left and the third star at right, and every letter of E PLURIBUS. In the date it shows inside the upper loops of both 8s and on the outer edge of the 7's upright. On the obverse, a light crack leaves the bust's base and enters the field over the date, and the whole obverse is covered with heavy N/S polish lines. The reverse is WDDR-001. TRUST's R has a broken upper bar, and a tail feather has been re-engraved between the eagle's right wing and leg. Strong N/S polish lines cover the reverse's lower part and sides; a long NW/SE scratch runs from the top of the eagle's left wing to the M of AMERICA. John A. Reengraved tail feather between eagle's right leg and wing. Strong N/S die polish lines over lower and sides of reverse. Long NW/SE die scratch from top of eagle's left wing to M of AMERICA.
