1878 (S) Morgan Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

1878-S WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1878-S Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY is tripled, spreading both to the east and to the west. The wheat ears, the two left cotton leaves and the hair under LIBERTY are doubled, as are the eyelid, nostril and chin, and US UNUM is spread toward the center. On the obverse, a gouge lies between the rim and the upper left of PLURIBUS's U. Both 8s are doubled inside the upper left of their loops, and the 7 is doubled on its upper right side. On the reverse, an engraved feather sits between the right wing and leg of the eagle, and the R in TRUST is not broken. Kyle Kafka submitted the variety. Its VAM numbers are 29 and 31, and Wexler notes the pictured coin is the VAM 29 die pairing.
