Description
The 1878 (CC) Morgan Dollar is a dollar produced at the Carson City Mint as part of the Morgan Dollars 1878-1921 series. With a mintage of 2.2 million, this is a less common issue — ranked 5th of 11 mint variants by mintage, with 4% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, encircled by stars and the reverse displays an eagle with outstretched wings clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by a wreath. First year of the Morgan Dollar. Eight tail feather and seven tail feather varieties exist from early die adjustments. Struck at the Carson City Mint in Nevada, which operated from 1870 to 1893 and produced coins from Comstock Lode silver and gold — among the most collectible mintmarks in U.S. numismatics. Estimated market value ranges from $256 to $978 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
