1878-S VAM-1B Pitted Tail Feathers, Lines in Hair & Eagle’s Talons Discovered by Martin Field, March 1983. 1B II 1 · B2a (Pitted Tail Feathers, Lines in Hair & Eagle’s Talons) (184, 186) Obverse II 1– Heavy die polishing lines in hair at back of neck. Reverse B2a– Two heavy diagonal die gouge lines in space above eagle’s right talons and a heavy diagonal line in space between eagle’s right wing and leg. Later die state shows raised dots from die rust pits at upper right in tail feathers and lower right wreath. Two die chips in lower part of eagle’s right wing. Early die gouge die state has 186 reeds and later rusted die state has 184 reeds. '''DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: '''Comments: Fourth right star is broken (hub defect) and the r of trust is intact. Formerly 1H (Now eliminated) & the same as 1878-S VAM-1B. Later die stages will show a small amount of pitting below the second right leaf cluster.
