1878-S VAM-1C Die Chip R, Reverse Die used in 1879 Discovered by Calvin Cherry, February 2002.( re-instated October 2,2015 Brian Raines) This coin is a Top 30 1878-S Variety. Reinstatement text 2015 1C (re-instated) II 1 • B2bk (Die Chip R, Lightly Engraved Wing Feather, Rev Die Used in 1879) (184) Obverse II 1 - Very slightly doubled left 8 at bottom outside, lower hair edge above date and 1-4 right stars, right wheat leaf on right side, top of Phrygian cap and L-R in PLURIBUS on right side. Slightly doubled E-P at top right and B at bottom. Fourth right star broken. Light polishing lines in fields. Die markers - Polished area in front of eye with vertical die scratch from eyelid and small horizontal die scratch below hair curl above eye rear. Reverse B2bk - Lightly engraved shallow feathers between eagle's right wing and leg. Slightly doubled D in DOLLAR at bottom. Die chip on upper right loop of R in AMERICA. R in Trust not broken. (same die as VAM 95). Die used later on 1879-S VAM-4,1879-S VAM-23 and 1879-S VAM-25. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: Same die chip on upper right of top loop of R in AMERICA same as 1878-S VAM-95 & 1878-S VAM-116. Die later used on 1879-S VAM-4, 1879-S VAM-23 & 1879-S VAM-25. (56, 66?). Copied from Leroy Van Allen letter dated October 2, 2015.
