Die Trials, Hub Trials, and Splashers 1792-1982
Coin Series
About This Series
Production artifacts never intended for circulation, die trials, hub trials, and splashers provide invaluable insight into how the Mint translated designs into mass-produced coinage. Die trials are test impressions struck from finished dies — often in soft metals like lead or tin — to verify accuracy and press calibration. Hub trials capture impressions from master hubs (positive design tools) used to sink working dies, documenting an earlier production stage. Splashers are thin uniface impressions pressed against soft metal sheets, producing shallow impressions revealing surface detail without full three-dimensional depth. These pieces span the full range of Mint operations from 1792 through the modern era, though pre-20th-century examples are extraordinarily rare. Materials include lead, tin, white metal, copper, and aluminum. Uniface examples confirm single-die testing, while double-sided pieces indicate paired-die trials. Each surviving specimen contributes to reconstructing Mint production processes, and their extreme rarity — most were discarded as workshop waste — makes them among the most elusive American numismatic items.
