Description

The Judd-9 is the silver version of the 1792 Disme pattern, struck with a reeded edge, and one of the most celebrated rarities in all of American numismatics. While the 1792 Disme was produced primarily in copper (approximately twenty examples survive), the silver strikings are profoundly rare, with no more than three or four specimens traced. The coin was struck using the same dies as the copper J-10 and J-11 varieties: the obverse features Liberty with flowing hair facing left, inscribed "LIBERTY PARENT OF SCIENCE & INDUST." with the date 1792, while the reverse shows an eagle in flight with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "DISME" below. The silver composition aligns with the Coinage Act of 1792's specifications for silver coinage and indicates these pieces were struck as presentation examples to demonstrate the proposed denomination in its intended metal. The coin has passed through legendary collections including those of Dr. J. Hewitt Judd and Donald G. Partrick.
