About This Coin
The 1849 Three Cent Patterns page groups the first three-cent pieces, made after Representative Samuel Vinton asked the Mint early in 1849 for a three-cent coin: a half dime obverse with a plain reverse showing 3 (J-111) or III (J-112), in silver-copper alloys and later in standard silver, and mulings of the two reverses (J-113, J-114). uspatterns.com dates the mulings to the late 1850s or early 1860s.
