Connecticut Copper Coins

About This Coin

Connecticut authorized copper coinage in October 1785, granting a monopoly to the Company for Coining Coppers (initially Samuel Bishop, Joseph Hopkins, James Hillhouse, and John Goodrich). The coins were struck primarily at a mint in New Haven, with additional production by Abel Buell and possibly at facilities in Machin's Mills, New York. Over 300 distinct die varieties were produced between 1785 and 1788, featuring various bust styles (mailed, draped, small head, Hercules head, laughing head) and numerous legend errors. Production ceased after the ratification of the U.S. Constitution established federal authority over coinage.
