About This Coin
New York heard petitions to coin copper from John Bailey, Ephraim Brasher and Thomas Machin in 1787 but authorized no coinage, passing instead an act of April 20, 1787 that fixed which coppers could circulate. The pieces gathered here carry New York themes: the NON VI VIRTUTE VICI coppers of 1786, the 1787 EXCELSIOR pieces with the state arms and an eagle, the George Clinton copper and the Indian pieces reading LIBER NATUS LIBERTATEM DEFENDO. Crosby believed most were privately made, some perhaps as patterns.
