New Jersey Copper Coins

About This Coin

New Jersey's act of June 1, 1786 authorized Walter Mould, Albion Cox and Thomas Goadsby to coin 10,000 pounds in coppers at fifteen to the shilling, each weighing six pennyweight six grains, and a supplement of November 1786 let Goadsby and Cox work apart from Mould, who struck at Morristown. The design, set by the justices of the state Supreme Court, shows a horse's head above a plow with NOVA CAESAREA and a shield with E PLURIBUS UNUM. CoinWeek puts the output at about four million pieces, many struck outside the terms of the contract, before the coppers were demonetized in 1790. Edward Maris's 1881 numbers identify the die pairs.
