Description
This 1786 Connecticut copper has a small head facing right and the reverse legend ETLIB INDE. Connecticut gave Samuel Bishop, Joseph Hopkins, James Hillhouse and John Goodrich leave to coin coppers in October 1785, each to weigh six pennyweight like a British halfpenny, with a head and AUCTORI CONNEC on the obverse and a seated Liberty holding an olive branch, with INDE ET LIB and the date, on the reverse. The partners formed the Company for Coining Coppers at New Haven; a committee report of 1789, printed by Crosby, says its owners coined until about June 1787 and that the state inspectors had passed 28,944 pounds of coppers. Crosby describes two small-head dies of 1786 sharing this reverse and doubted they were genuine state coppers because of their light weight and different style. PCGS number 325.
