Description
This 1787 Connecticut copper is the Muttonhead, a very large mailed head facing right. Connecticut gave Samuel Bishop, Joseph Hopkins, James Hillhouse and John Goodrich leave to coin coppers in October 1785, each to weigh six pennyweight like a British halfpenny, with a head and AUCTORI CONNEC on the obverse and a seated Liberty holding an olive branch, with INDE ET LIB and the date, on the reverse. The partners formed the Company for Coining Coppers at New Haven; a committee report of 1789, printed by Crosby, says its owners coined until about June 1787 and that the state inspectors had passed 28,944 pounds of coppers. Crosby calls it the largest head on the Connecticut coins, with a wreath of eleven leaves, and says it is seldom found well preserved. PCGS number 343.
