About This Coin
Ephraim Brasher was a New York goldsmith who petitioned the state in February 1787 for leave to coin copper; New York authorized no coinage. His gold doubloons of 1787 show the sun rising over mountains above the sea with NOVA EBORACA COLUMBIA EXCELSIOR and BRASHER, and an eagle with E PLURIBUS UNUM, with his EB hallmark punched into the eagle on the breast or on the wing. He also made doubloons in the style of the Lima mint and stamped his hallmark on foreign gold coins. This group holds those pieces and a later copper copy of the doubloon.
