About This Coin

The 1815 Die Trial is a United States coin from the Die Trials, Hub Trials, and Splashers 1792-1982 series. The obverse features test impressions from coin dies, ranging from fully detailed to partial impressions, while the reverse displays test impressions that may be blank, partial, or paired with unrelated dies (mules). Designed by Various Mint engravers. Die trials, hub trials, and splashers are test pieces created during the coin production process. Die trials test the quality and alignment of finished dies. Hub trials test the master hubs used to create dies. Splashers are shallow, often one-sided test impressions. These pieces were never intended for circulation. Extremely rare by nature — most were destroyed after testing. Surviving examples provide invaluable documentation of the Mint's production process.
