The 1889 Die Trial is a United States coin from the Die Trials, Hub Trials, and Splashers 1792-1982 series — a late issue, 32nd of 39 years in the series. In 1889, coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse features test impressions from coin dies, ranging from fully detailed to partial impressions and the reverse displays test impressions that may be blank, partial, or paired with unrelated dies (mules). Struck during the Gilded Age of rapid industrialization and the great silver debates, when monetary policy shaped elections and economic destiny. A notable auction result reached $19K in MS64 grade at Heritage Auctions. Designed by Various Mint engravers.
