The 1849 Die Trial is a United States coin from the Die Trials, Hub Trials, and Splashers 1792-1982 series — 13th of 39 years in the series. In 1849, coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse features test impressions from coin dies, ranging from fully detailed to partial impressions and the reverse displays test impressions that may be blank, partial, or paired with unrelated dies (mules). Minted during the age of Jacksonian democracy and the rise of the common man, as new branch mints opened in Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans. Designed by Various Mint engravers.
