About This Coin

The 1863 Die Trial is a United States coin from the Die Trials, Hub Trials, and Splashers 1792-1982 series — 23rd of 39 years in the series. In 1863, coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse features test impressions from coin dies, ranging from fully detailed to partial impressions and the reverse displays test impressions that may be blank, partial, or paired with unrelated dies (mules). Produced during the Civil War, when coin hoarding caused severe shortages and the Mint experimented with new compositions to keep coins in circulation. A notable auction result reached $21K in MS64 grade at Heritage Auctions. Designed by Various Mint engravers.
