The 1867 Nickel Patterns page brings together the Judd-numbered five-cent patterns dated 1867 in the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. After the rays were removed from the regular reverse early in 1867, the Mint looked at other designs and metals. Longacre proposed striking the five-cent piece in aluminum in June 1867, and the new Director, Henry Linderman, objected to its cost and uncertain supply (Wikipedia, Shield nickel). The patterns include Longacre's Indian head in aluminum and copper (J-561 to J-564), Liberty heads modeled on the nickel three-cent piece (J-565 to J-571), copper strikes from the regular dies (J-572, J-573, J-573a), and mulings that USPatterns.com believes were struck outside the Mint (J-574 to J-585).
